Moving to the United States and starting a new life as a Latino isn’t easy, it sure wasn’t for me. It was no less than a dolor de cabeza (headache). As a freelancer, the toughest decision for me was to find an internet connection for my home.
I even involved a couple of friends to help with the decision because mi casa es tu casa(my house is your house), right? With their guidance, I went through a couple of internet connection types till I finally chose the one for me. Here are all my findings.
1. A Cable Internet Connection
A cable internet connection is the most common type in the United States. So, as a newly immigrant Latino, you’ll need the kind of internet connection that is available no matter where you go, right? A cable internet connection utilizes the same coaxial cables that provide you with a TV service.
You may also opt for a cable internet service that allows you to bundle your services together; for instance, you can get an internet and TV service at a reduced cost! If I share my own experience, I opted for Cox’s bundle.
Since I was new to the process, I contacted Cox servicio al cliente 24 horas, and thankfully enough, I was put in contact with another Spanish speaker who made the process a breeze for me!
Among the many reasons behind my getting a cable internet connection was the fact that it didn’t break the bank. It was easy on my budget and I found that very useful.
2. A Fiber Internet Connection
If you prefer high speeds, then a fiber internet connection is what you need. Fiber cables have an intricate infrastructure consisting of glass cores and laser or LED impulses that transmit internet data. These cables also run underground, which is why they are not available everywhere since they are difficult to place everywhere.
While an internet connection gives you the fastest download and upload speeds, they are relatively expensive than a cable internet connection. If you can afford that difference, then you should get a fiber internet connection for yourself. It also takes the cake when it comes to reliability, giving you all the more reason to get an internet connection.
3. A Satellite Internet Connection
In terms of availability, a satellite internet service takes the lead. It’s a great option to go for if you are in a rural area, which seldom has internet services like cable internet and fiber internet. A satellite internet connection picks up internet signals from satellites orbiting the Earth, which is why this type of internet connection is easily available.
A DSL Internet Connection
A digital subscriber line (DSL) internet connection is also among the offered internet types in the United States. A DSL internet connection uses the voice frequencies in telephone lines to send and receive internet data and traffic, to and from your internet service provider (ISP). This ensures a fast internet connection but the catch is that you have to be near your DSL provider.
However, DSL internet connection has slower internet speed than cable and fiber internet connection. If price is a pain point for you, then a DSL internet connection can help, but you’ll have to compromise on the internet speed.
4. 4G Internet
If you don’t wish to opt for internet connections like fiber, cable, and DSL internet services, then you can always opt for cellular services. Numerous internet service providers offer 4G services throughout the United States.
Cellular internet typically uses a router or a hotspot to connect to an ISP’s cellular network. However, 4G internet has lower speeds than a fiber internet connection, and if you are far from the network tower, your internet speed will diminish. Before you proceed with getting a cellular network, make sure that the network tower is close to your house.
5. 5G Internet
5G internet is significantly faster than 4G internet, and a lot of people are making a shift towards it. 5G internet can be used as a home internet service instead of just a mobile network. A lot of people have 5G internet in their homes rather than a broadband internet connection.
5G home internet usually gives you download speeds of 40-300 Mbps and upload speeds of 10-50Mbps. It is a relatively cheaper option than broadband internet which is why people prefer getting 5G home internet.
Word of Advice
From one Latino to another, opting for a cable internet connection is a fair bet for you. You can find relatable internet plans with uncapped data, meaning there is no limit to your internet usage. The price is also easy on your budget, making sure that you don’t go overboard while spending your money!
Goodluck, friend! (Buena suerte, amiga!)
